The Neanderthals were committed carnivores, and in order to obtain enough animal meat to survive, they needed to be skilled hunters. Neanderthals hunted bison, auroch (an ancestor of living cattle), deer, reindeer and musk ox, to name but a few.

They probably trapped their prey in bogs or on deep stream banks before closing in with their spears and making a kill at close range. A high rate of head and neck trauma in Neanderthals matches the pattern seen in present-day rodeo riders suggesting that, like these sportsmen, Neanderthals were tackling big animals up close and getting thrown off them.

"They do seem to have gone in for a much more in-your-face culture. That was reflected in the way they went in for the food quest. It was the same sort of pattern," says Gamble. "This applied to the way they built their societies, which I think were based on face-to-face interaction."

Squirrel goes on rampage, injures 3

An aggressive squirrel attacked and injured three people in a German town before a 72-year-old pensioner dispatched the rampaging animal with his crutch.
The squirrel first ran into a house in the southern town of Passau, leapt from behind on a 70-year-old woman, and sank its teeth into her hand, a local police spokesman said Thursday.
With the squirrel still hanging from her hand, the woman ran onto the street in panic, where she managed to shake it off.
The animal then entered a building site and jumped on a construction worker, injuring him on the hand and arm, before he managed to fight it off with a measuring pole.
"After that, the squirrel went into the 72-year-old man's garden and massively attacked him on the arms, hand and thigh," the spokesman said. "Then he killed it with his crutch."
The spokesman said experts thought the attack may have been linked to the mating season or because the squirrel was ill.

O.J. Simpson’s hypothetical tell-all book “If I Did It” may be published after all—with the help of murder victim Ronald L. Goldman’s family. A California court ruled Tuesday that proceeds from the auction of the book rights would go to the Goldman family, not Simpson. Simpson was found liable in 1997 for the wrongful deaths of Goldman and O.J.’s ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson, which occured on June 12, 1994. Simpson has paid almost nothing of the $33.5 million judgment (now, with interest, grown to $38 million) he owes to the Goldman and Brown families.
So this week a judge in Santa Monica, Calif., took the book’s “reversionary” rights from Simpson, and awarded them to the Goldman family. He also ordered that the rights be auctioned at a sheriff’s sale in Sacramento, where current publisher HarperCollins has an office. The mysterious company that originally sold the book to HarperCollins may try to block the sale, according to Simpson’s attorney, which could happen next month. But in theory, when HarperCollins’s rights to the book lapse this summer, the new owner would be free to publish.

1/3 cup tahini
1/4 cup lemon juice
2 tablespoon olive oil
2 garlic cloves, crushed
1/2 cup -3/4 cup roasted red peppers (depending on taste)
PREPARATION:
In a food processor, combine beans, tahini, lemon juice and olive. Process until smooth. Add red peppers and garlic until desired consistency.

Garnish with parsley.
Serve warm with hot pita bread or toasted pita chips.

A judge sentenced a shocked and tearful Paris Hilton to 45 days in jail on Friday, ruling that the celebrity hotel heiress violated her probation for an earlier alcohol-related traffic offense.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Sauer sternly rejected Hilton's story that she did not knowingly disobey the law by driving while her license was suspended and ordered the 26-year-old socialite to report to a county detention facility on June 5, or face 90 days in jail.
Hilton wept and her mother, Kathy, yelled at the prosecutor, "You're pathetic," as the packed courtroom cleared.

Schirra had a heart attack and died early on Thursday at a hospital near his home in Rancho Santa Fe, California, said Ruth Varonfakis, a friend and spokeswoman for the San Diego Air & Space Museum, where Schirra was on the board.
She said he had cancer, but that his family asked her not to discuss it. NASA said he had died on Wednesday night.

Melkert is the former Dutch social affairs minister and a former leader of the Dutch Labor Party, one of the three parties in the current coalition government.

WASHINGTON — Ending two years of silence on his role in the Iraq war, former CIA Director George J. Tenet is using a new book and a barrage of upcoming television appearances to accuse the White House of making him a scapegoat and of ignoring early CIA warnings that Iraq was sinking into chaos.
In a taped interview scheduled to air Sunday on CBS, Tenet said President Bush had made up his mind to invade Iraq long before the CIA director made his infamous Oval Office remark that it was a "slam-dunk" case that Saddam Hussein's government had banned weapons.
Tenet was even more forceful in his criticism of Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, saying that the two had destroyed his reputation by repeatedly using the "slam-dunk" line to pin blame on him for the decision to go to war.
"It's the most despicable thing that ever happened to me," Tenet said in the "60 Minutes" interview, according to an excerpt CBS released Thursday.

One day a woman's husband died, and on that clear, cold morning, in the warmth of their bedroom, the wife was struck with the pain of learning that sometimes there isn't anymore. No more hugs, no more special moments to celebrate together, no more phone calls just to chat, no more "just one minute." Sometimes, what we care about the most gets all used up and goes away, never to return before we can say good-bye, or say "I love you."

So while we have it, it's best we love it, care for it, fix it when it's broken and heal it when it's sick. This is true for marriage ... and old cars .. and children with bad report cards, and dogs with bad hips, and aging parents and grandparents. We keep them because they are worth it, because we are worth it.

Some things we keep -- like a best friend who moved away or a classmate we grew up with. There are just some things that make us happy, no matter what.

Life is important, like people we know who are special. And so, we keep them close!

I received this from someone who thought I was a 'keeper'! Then I sent it to the people I think of in the same way. Now it's your turn to send this to all those people who are "keepers" in your life, including the person who sent it, if you feel that way. Suppose one morning you never wake up, do all your friends know you love them?

I was thinking.........I could die today, tomorrow or next week, and I wondered if I had any wounds needing to be healed, friendships that needed rekindling or three words needing to be said.

Let every one of your friends know you love them. Even if you think they don't love you back, you would be amazed at what those three little words and a smile can do.
And just in case GOD calls me home .

Crab Rangoon

Makes: 26 to 30 rolls
Prep time: 20 minutes
Cook time: 10 minutes
1/2 small red onion
2 tablespoons pickled jalapeno pepper slices
4 ounces cream cheese
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 teaspoon hot sauce to taste
1 pound canned claw crabmeat, picked over to remove any pieces of shell
30 6-by-6-inch wonton wrappers (or round ones, if available)
1/3 cup canola or vegetable oil
Asian duck sauce (also called plum sauce)
Preheat oven to 200 F.
In a food processor, combine the red onion and jalapeno peppers. Pulse until finely diced, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed. Add the cream cheese, salt, pepper and hot sauce, then pulse again until well combined. Scrape down the sides as needed.
Transfer the mixture to a large bowl. Add the crabmeat and mix well with the spatula to blend. Set aside.
Fill a small bowl with water. Set aside.
Use a large round cookie or biscuit cutter to cut a circle out of one wonton wrapper. (If using round wrappers, skip this step.) Place 1 tablespoon of the crab mixture in the center. Dip your fingers in the bowl of water, then wet the edges of the wonton circle.
Fold one side of the wonton over the crab, creating a half moon. Gently press the edges together, then use a fork to crimp them. Alternatively, Asian markets sell wonton or dumpling presses, which fold and seal them for you. Repeat with remaining ingredients.
Heat the oil in a large, deep skillet over medium-high heat until it shimmers. Add the dumplings three or four at a time and fry, using tongs to turn as needed, until lightly browned and crispy on all sides, about 30 second per side.
Transfer to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. After the rolls have drained several minutes, transfer them to a plate placed in the oven to keep warm.
Serve crab rolls with bowls of duck sauce for dipping.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., has compared the missing e-mails to the 18-minute gap on President Nixon's Watergate tapes. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., says the White House message to Congress is: ``We are stonewalling.''
The White House chalks it up to just another outbreak of Democratic Rove rage. ``My experience has been that any time Karl Rove's name is mentioned, it adds to the ammunition, regardless of merit,'' White House deputy press secretary Dana Perino said.
Only Dick Cheney raises the same kind of anger - and there is not much they can do about the vice president, short of impeachment.

Almost all e-mails that ask you to add your name and forward on to others are similar to that mass letter years ago that asked people to send business cards to the little kid in Florida who wanted to break the Guinness Book of Records for the most cards All it was, and all this type of e-mail is, is to get names and 'cookie' tracking info for tele-marketers and spammers to validate active e-mail accounts for their own purposes.

Here's a joke I find amusing.

Little Leroy came into the kitchen where his mom was making dinner. His
birthday was coming up, and he thought this was a good time to tell his
mother what he wanted.

"Mom, I want a bike for my birthday."

Little Leroy was a bit of a troublemaker. He had gotten into trouble at
school and at home.

Leroy's mother asked him if he thought he deserved to get a bike for his
birthday. "Of course," he said.

Leroy's mother, being a Christian woman, wanted him to reflect on his
behavior over the last year. "Go to your room, Leroy, and think about
how you've behaved this year.
Then write a letter to God and tell him why you deserve a bike for your
birthday."

Little Leroy stomped up the steps to his room and sat down to write God
a letter.

Letter 1: "Dear God, I have been a very good boy this year, and I would
like a bike for my birthday. I want a red one.
Your friend, Leroy."

Leroy knew this was not true, so he tore the letter up and wrote a new
one.

Letter 2: "Dear God, I have been an okay boy this year. I still would
like a bike for my birthday. Leroy."

This letter was no good either.

Letter 3: "Dear God, I know I haven't been a good boy this year. I am
very sorry, and I will be a good boy next year if you just send me a
bike for my birthday. Please. Thank you. Leroy."

Leroy knew this wasn't true, and now he was getting upset.
He went downstairs and told his mother he needed to go to church. She
thought her plan had worked and told him to be home in time for dinner.

Leroy walked into the church and went to the altar. He looked around to
see if anyone was watching. He bent down, picked up the statue of the
Virgin Mary, and slipped it under his coat.

Letter 4: "Dear God, I got your mama. If you want to see her again, send

It took a Coast Guard helicopter to rescue a man and his pet cockatoo from the heights of a pine tree after he got stuck trying retrieve the $2,000 bird.
William Hart, 35, had climbed about 60 feet up the tree to get the bird after it escaped from its cage and flew out a bedroom window. Television video showed him standing on a branch Tuesday evening awaiting rescue, the exotic white bird apparently tucked under his shirt.
The bird, Geronimo, got out after Hart’s daughter apparently forgot to latch his cage after feeding him, Hart told the Houston Chronicle. He said he spotted Geronimo in flight and chased him, then climbed the tree until the cockatoo flew to his arm.

It's been nearly four years since Pat Tillman was killed in Afghanistan by friendly fire. But CBS News has learned that investigations by the Pentagon's inspector general will now blame nine officers — including four generals — for failing to follow regulations and using poor judgment in a series of missteps that kept the truth of how Tillman died from his family for more than a month.
The official version was that the former NFL star had died in a fire fight with the enemy. It was only after a nationally televised memorial service was held for Tillman that his wife and parents were told he had been mistakenly shot by one of his own men.
Until now, only low-ranking soldiers who were part of Tillman's Army Ranger unit have been disciplined in the events surrounding his death. It will now be up to the Army to decide what, if any, disciplinary action to take against these nine officers.
According to a defense official, it does not appear that the inspector general's investigation, the fifth inquiry into Tillman's death, found any indication of an orchestrated cover-up. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue, said it appears that senior military leaders may not have had all the facts or worked hard enough to get the facts of what happened on that day in April 2004.

Cruise line officials are trying to figure out how two passengers managed to fall at least 50 feet from a ship's balcony into the Gulf of Mexico Sunday, where they were rescued hours later.
"You cannot just fall off a ship," said Princess Lines' spokeswoman Julie Benson, describing the occurrence as "extremely rare ... this hasn't happened to Princess, that I can recall."
The 22-year-old man and 20-year-old woman -- who have not been identified publicly other than as Americans -- fell at about 1:30 a.m., 150 miles from Galveston, Benson said.
They were recovering Sunday with minor injuries in the medical center aboard the Grand Princess, a spokeswoman for Princess Cruises told CNN.

Chris Simon, the New York Islanders' tough guy who slashed the Rangers' Ryan Hollweg in the face Thursday night, has suspended by the NHL for the remainder of the regular season and seven playoff games, TSN reported on its web site Saturday.
Since the Islanders have 15 regular season games left, the suspension could be for as long as 22 games.
This is the sixth time Simon has been suspended by the league.
Simon's suspension is the second-longest in NHL history for an on-ice incident. Marty McSorley was banned for 23 games for hitting Donald Brashear in the head with his stick in 2000.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was having an extramarital affair even as he led the charge against President Clinton over the Monica Lewinsky affair, he acknowledged in an interview with a conservative Christian group.
"The honest answer is yes," Gingrich, a potential 2008 Republican presidential candidate, said in an interview with Focus on the Family founder James Dobson to be aired Friday, according to a transcript provided to The Associated Press. "There are times that I have fallen short of my own standards. There's certainly times when I've fallen short of God's standards."

Scalloped turnips An Irish-inspired veggie dish

The Irish people subsisted for thousands of years on root crops and various sources of meat such as lamb. One of the staples of their diet was turnips. Here's one of my family's favorite ways to prepare the roots of the turnip.

1/2 lb. bacon chopped, fried, drained, and fryings reserved.
3 lbs. medium Purple Top White Globe turnips, peeled and sliced 1/4" thick.
2 to 3 medium yellow onions peeled and coarsely chopped.
2 to 3 cloves of garlic diced
1 carton sour cream

Sauté the scalloped turnips for a minute or so in a medium hot iron skillet of the bacon fryings. Season liberally with fresh ground peppercorns. Add the onions, and garlic, and stir frequently to prevent sticking to the skillet. Water or chicken broth may be added as needed. When the turnips and onions begin to brown reduce the heat, cover, and smother the veggies until tender. Add the fried bacon, stir, and allow the flavors to meld for a few minutes at a lowered heat. When al dente turn off the heat, add sour cream as desired, and serve. This is good with most any meat dish and has converted several people into turnip lovers.

I would take a presidential pardon of Libby as a show of arrogance making the White House immune to the Justice system.
That is the question of the day as the media, commentators and bloggers all have their say in the aftermath of Lewis "Scooter" Libby's conviction for lying to investigators during the probe into who leaked CIA officer Valerie Plame's name to the media in 2003.
As USA TODAY's Ken Dilanian writes, "With the ink hardly dry on ... Libby's perjury conviction, some conservatives are urging President Bush to wipe away the jury's finding of guilt by granting the former vice presidential aide a pardon."
New York Post columnist John Podhertz goes so far as to say it's a sure thing that Libby will eventually be cleared by the president:
Why? Because if Bush fails to pardon Libby, he will implicitly be accepting the contention that Scooter Libby was part of a White House conspiracy at the highest levels to destroy the career of a CIA agent whose husband had proved Bush & Co. had lied us into the Iraq War.

Injured Marine struggles at home
U.S. Marine Warren Hardy, of Campbell, flew 8 feet in the air in his armored personnel carrier after it hit a landmine in Iraq. Hardy, since released, finds it hard to deal with everyday living after the accident.
He had short-term memory problems and could no longer multi-task. He now experiences numbness in his arms and has lost strength in his limbs, and suffers outbursts of anger - a condition known as Traumatic Brain Injury and a common injury in Iraq. Just holding one of his newborn triplet sons to feed him can be difficult.
Hardy receives regular treatment at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System, where he is learning how to make day-to-day living easier. But the family's military health insurance expired Dec. 4, and as of last week, two of the three triplets are still in the hospital.
"We're just struggling, barely able to make ends meet," he said

Mexico's 'Half-Ton Man' Sheds Nearly 400 Pounds... Just 575 to Go

Manuel Uribe, who once weighed half a ton, left his house Wednesday for the first time in five years.
Six people pushed Uribe's wheel-equipped iron bed out to the street, as a mariachi band played and a crowd gathered to see the man who once weighed 1,235 pounds.
"The sky is beautiful and blue and what I want is to enjoy the sun," Uribe said after taking a sip from a champagne bottle.
Unable to leave his bed for more than five years, Uribe has lost 397 pounds since he began a high-protein diet a year ago. He now weighs about 840 pounds.
To celebrate the milestone, a forklift placed Uribe's bed onto a trailer pulled by a pickup truck and the 41-year-old mechanic rode through the streets of San Nicolas de los Garza, a Monterrey suburb.
Dozens of reporters and photographers followed Uribe as he passed the town's plaza and church, waving at clusters of people eager to get a glimpse of him.

Two young men, who had apparently been smoking lots of marijuana, called police to report that they were holding two burglars who had broken into their apartment in Reno, Nev. But, when the cops arrived, there were no burglars. The men explained that one of them woke up to find the bathroom door locked, leading them to believe the burglars were in there. They slipped notes under the bathroom door to communicate with them. Police found the notes in the empty bathroom, and arrested the young men for possession of 23 grams of marijuana and 10 bongs.
